Even though the sinking of the Ertugrul is one of the saddest events of the Ottoman Navy, it is seen by many as the cornerstone of the friendship between Japanese and Turkish people, and is, therefore, a very important fact in Turkish history.
In 2004 Tufan Turanli took a trip to Kushimoto, in Oshima Island, to study the possibilities of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology starting a serious archaeological project..... and everything began.
Now, in a joint project, the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and YapiKredi Emeklelik are renewing the friendship and relations between the two nations.
An international team of Turkish, Japanese and American members is moving to Kushimoto in January 2007 to conduct a sonar survey where the Ertugrul sank. But that's only the beginning of the project, for research on the disaster, and on the descendants of both the Turkish sailors and the fishermen of Kushimoto who helped them, will take place.
The driving force of the project is to renew interest in this historical event and to retrieve for the Turkish and Japanese public remains of the Ottoman ship. In a joint effort INA and YapiKredi Emeklilik will accomplish this goal with the help of underwater archaeology.
