I’m Randall Sasaki, a graduate student at Texas A&M University (NAP). I joined the project because I can speak both English and Japanese, and I have worked on projects in Japan before. This was the first time that I have visited this area, and I was amazed about the beauty of the nature in Kushimoto.
This is my first full participation in an INA project. It is of special importance for me since it is dealing with an Ottoman steam ship of an early period, which represents my special field of interest. Because I have no archaeological background I never saw myself certified to be active in earlier periods of nautical archaeology. But having an engineering background and being a keen navigator and a keen diver resulted in my becoming interested in shipwrecks of the steam age period –including submarines from the same period.
Today the research team held a meeting with Toyo Corporation team about the results of sonar survey. Dives are planned to be started at the same area than Tufan Turanl? dived in 2004 and more points will be decided after analyzing the sonar survey results.
At 16:00 Hantani and Turanli had a press meeting to share the sonar survey results with the public and gave general information about the project plans.
